SRWRA 600ML Storage

Client: SRWRA
Date: 2019

Exact Contracting mobilised to Seaford Rise in October 2019 to construct a 600ML storage for the Willunga Water Basin.

The dam is a part of a significant sustainable resource management project to hold reclaimed water that was historically pumped from Christies Beach into the Gulf St Vincent. Expanding recycled water supply to the region reduces the stress on the local aquifers, diverts this water away from the ocean, and provides greater water security for the region.

Initial challenges were the project’s tight construction deadline, as well as operating within an urban environment ensuring adequate controls were in place so that the surrounding community were minimally impacted.

The short construction timeframe was required to utilize the drier summer months and enable commissioning of the dam to allow enough time to start accepting recycled water throughout winter to service the Mclaren Vale wine region throughout the growing season of 2020.

  • The project scope of works included pipeworks, a DPTI road underbore, site water and electrical connections, topsoil strip and stockpile, landscaping bund construction, site access roads and perimeter fencing, bulk earthworks, clay lining, underdrainage, inlet/outlet and overflow structures and HDPE lining.
  • The cut and fill to finished surface was 360,000m3 (the equivalent of approximately 6,200 40ft shipping containers) which also included 74,000m3 of over excavation subgrade preparation.
  • 95,000m2 of dam HDPE lining, (the equivalent size of 5 Adelaide Ovals) was installed and secured in a cement stabilised anchor trench.

Key achievements throughout the project:

  • Working diligently with the Client and third party engineer SMEC to ensure all quality assurance criteria was achieved for sign off on practical completion 5 months from site mobilisation.
  • Skilled and competent personnel to undertake detailed pipe and surrounding civil works (including under-bore of Victor Harbour Road) in conjunction with bulk earthworks.
